December 2015
Dear Gold Badge Members and Friends,

On Wednesday, Dec. 9the 2015 Promotional Ceremony at Navy Pier once again, this time in the evening to allow for children to attend without missing school and spouse without missing work at Navy Pier-Grand Ballroom 7:00 pm to approx. 8:00 pm. There were a little over 200 member promoted this year to various ranks. It is a tradition for the GBS to attend these ceremonies to add our congratulations to the newly promoted. Since we have reserved seating we need to respond by 11.30 by 8:00 a.m. If you are a GBS member who has been promoted, we would love to have your family join us.

Sheraton Hotel and Towers will again share their generosity and host our annual Christmas/Holiday party on Sunday December 6th. This GBS member event will begin at Noon with lunch served from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with socializing until 4:00 p.m. in the Fountain View Room which is on the lobby level. Please RSVP to Eileen at this address or via cell 708.560.5792. Please include special requests. i.e. highchair, children’s/vegetarian meal, etc. The Sheraton is located at 301 East North Water Street, Chicago.

Saturday December 5th, Local 2 Annual Toy Drive and Parade! Thank you to everyone whom has donated toward the Local 2 Toy Drive! For over 10 years, we have been always fortunate to raise enough money with donations given directly from our GBS members to purchase bike helmets without using GBS funds. Though economy is tough for all, the tough economy only means there are all the more needy children. Our goal is to be able to donate 100 helmets to this truly wonderful family event. If you would like to donate, please send to our address with bike helmets in memo. Also, community service hours will be available if needed the day of event. Will gather at Local 2 to help beginning at 8:00 a.m. The parade will step off at 10:00 a.m. for the Electrician Union Hall located at 600 West Washington. Paid parking available located behind the hall. This is where all bicycles, helmets, and other toys will be presented to Catholic Charities. This is a wonderful family event to kick off the Holiday Season. There is still time to donate for this worthy cause, as much as we would like to continue this next year, donations are low this year and would need to reconsider this in the future if we are still able to donate if unable to meet cost of helmets.

On Sunday, December 20thCongressman Dan Lipinski will honor Capt. Herbie Johnson and have a ceremony will take place to rename the Mount Greenwood post office. This will take place at the post office at located at 3349 W. 111th Street at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Thank you to the The Axemen IL Chapter 1for hosting a fundraiser for the GBS. Your support and generosity is so appreciated.

This upcoming year the Gold Badge Society will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary!! More details in upcoming months but without the support of so many, this organization would not be possible but could always move

forward so your help is always needed in attending monthly meetings, volunteering, and helping other members when needed.

Please take the time to visit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation web site, www.firehero.org. You may be surprised to find information that may concern you. You can have a paver installed with your loved ones as part of the Memorial. The deadline for installation in 2016 is December 31st. The NFFF is also looking to include pre-1981 LODDs.

Visit the State of Illinois Fire Marshals web site for information on including a memorial paver also with the deadline of December 31st at www.sfm.illinois.gov/.

****Due to the lack of a state budget, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office has suspended mailing annual notices to vehicle owners reminding them of their registration renewal obligations. The secretary of state estimates that this will save $450,000 per month and will enable his office to continue mailing vehicle registration renewal stickers, titles and license plates for a few more months before the office’s postage account runs out. Drivers who don’t sign up for email notification will need to renew their registration in person, as they will not have the necessary pin numbers for online renewal. (Illinois vehicle owners can sign up online at www.cyberdriveliinois.
