Dear Gold Badge Members and Friends, 

On April 1st, at 8:00 a.m., there will be a ceremonial bell ringing at Eng. 117, TL 14, Amb 15, 4900 West Chicago Avenue. The bell ringing will honor FF John (Jake) Hurter, commemorating the 30th Anniversary of his LODD. Keeping all the Hurters in our thoughts and prayers. All are welcome to attend.

On Friday April 15th, 14th Annual Battle of the Badges Boxing Expedition will take place at De LaSalle Institute located at 3455 S. Wabash @ 7:00 p.m. This is always a fun time and the generous proceeds from this event have supported the GBS tremendously throughout the years. We can’t thank them enough and GO CFD!!

On Saturday April 16th, CFD Blaze Football Dan Capuano Memorial Game will take place at the Evergreen Park Community HS Dist. 231 @ 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, April 17th, CFD Gold Badge Society 25th Anniversary

On Tuesday May 10th, the State of Illinois Medal of Honor and Memorial will take place. This year the State of Illinois Fire Marshall’s office will be honoring our two LODD, FF/PM Fidel Serrano Jr. and FF/PM Daniel Capuano at the Memorial Ceremony. The memorial will be held In Springfield at the State of Illinois Fire Fighter Memorial Site. Thank you to the generosity of Local 2, they will be providing bus transportation, due to availability and interest, there will be a pick up at two locations, 115 Bourbon Street (3359 W. 115th St) and Nonno’s Pino’s Restaurant (6718 N. Northwest Hwy). The buses will leave between 5:30-6:00 a.m. and return about 7:00 p.m. For more information/reserve a spot, please contact us at this address or Lynn at Local 2 773.536.0450.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has scheduled the Pre-1981 Dedication Ceremony on the Walk of Honor® for June 11th at 11:00 am at the National Memorial in

Emmitsburg, Maryland. A special section has been reserved to honor those who have died in the line of duty prior to 1981 when the memorial was built. They are trying to estimate a number of attendees, so if you would be interested in attending, please send an email to dclark@firehero.org. If you would like to sponsor a brick in the special pre-1981 section in time for the June 11th ceremony, please do so by April 15, 2016. For online orders, please make sure that the Pre-1981 LODD box is selected. You may also sponsor a brick by downloading and completing the order form and checking the “for a Pre-1981 LODD” option. In addition, if you have previously purchased a brick for a Pre-1981 LODD and would like it moved to this special section, please let them know by April 15, 2016. They are very pleased that this special section will be dedicated to all those who lost their lives prior to 1981. Thank you to all whom have supported the GBS Scholarship Program. All applications were due on March 31st. Recipients will be awarded during May’s monthly mass.

Not only does February mark our 25th anniversary, it is also the time that annual member dues of $10 are owed. Remember, if you are under 21 or over 65 you may waives dues but please inform us that you would like to be considered or remain a member. This conference will be held May 13-14, 2016, in Portland, Oregon. The theme for the conference is “Setting a Course for the Road Ahead.” For spouses, life partners, parents, adult children and siblings, this conference is designed to address physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The focus of this conference may especially appeal to those whose firefighter died within the past five years. The conference will begin with a welcome reception on Thursday, May 12 beginning at 7:00pm. Friday and Saturday will be filled with informational guidance and tips focusing on how to take care of your physical body, your mind and emotions.
