Dear Gold Badge Members and Friends, 

Thank you to all who helped celebrate GBS 25th Anniversary! A great time was had by all. Special thanks to Diane Patmon for planning this wonderful event, Ted Johnson and Fr. McNalis for working so hard on the photo presentation. Great job!!

This is truly a milestone and look forward to many more.

At the celebration, we also welcomed two new additions to the God Badge Society Board. Thank you to Diane Patmon as Program Director, and Ted Johnson as Historian. These positions are much needed to continue our path in moving forward.

On Tuesday May 10th, the State of Illinois Medal of Honor and Memorial will take place. This year the State of Illinois Fire Marshall’s office will be honoring our two LODD, FF/PM Fidel Serrano Jr. and FF/PM Daniel Capuano at the Memorial Ceremony. The memorial will be held In Springfield at the State of Illinois Fire Fighter Memorial Site. Thank you to the generosity of Local 2, they will be providing bus transportation, due to availability and interest, there will be a pick up at 115 Bourbon Street (3359 W. 115th St) ONLY. The buses will leave between 5:30-6:00 a.m. and return about 7:00 p.m. For more information/reserve a spot, please contact us at this address or Lynn at Local 2 773.536.0450 by Thursday May 5th.

On Friday, May 13 at 8:00AM, there will be a 30th Anniversary Bell Ringing in honor of Eng Robert VanderPloeg.  The bell ringing will be held at Eng 127, 5200 West 63rd St.  All are welcome and keeping the VanderPloeg’s in our thoughts.

On Wednesday May 18th, EMS Day will take place at the Quinn Fire Academy at 558 West DeKoven Street. GBS has been asked to be a participating Response Partner and will have a table in the drill hall. Volunteers will be needed. Set up will be between 8 and 9am. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us at this address or call Eileen by Friday May 13th.

On Tuesday, May 31stCFD Graduation will be held .  Navy Pier Grand Ballroom, 600 East Grand Avenue.  Please RSVP to Eileen by May 17.

On Monday, May 30th (1a-3), Chicago Fireman’ American Legion Post #667 presents the 83rd Annual Memorial Day service to be held at Holy Family Church located 1120 W. Roosevelt on Monday, May 30th (1a-3). Assembly of uniform and Post 667 members at 0900, followed by a short parade at 0930. Mass and service at 1000 with awarding of Post #667 scholarships at the end mass. This will be followed by a 21 gun salute, taps and flag raising ceremony outside of church. A continental breakfast will be served in the church basement. This annual Memorial Day mass is in honor of personnel and GBS members that have passed away in the last year.


Thank you to all whom have supported the GBS Scholarship Program. All applications were due on March 31st. Recipients will be awarded during May’s monthly mass.

News from The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation~

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has scheduled the Pre-1981 Dedication Ceremony on the Walk of Honor® for June 11th at 11:00 am at the National Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. A special section has been reserved to honor those who have died in the line of duty prior to 1981 when the memorial was built. They are trying to estimate a number of attendees, so if you would be interested in attending, please send an email to dclark@firehero.org. If you would like to sponsor a brick in the special pre-1981 section in time for the June 11th ceremony. For online orders, please make sure that the Pre-1981 LODD box is selected. You may also sponsor a brick by downloading and completing the order form and checking the “for a Pre-1981 LODD” option. In addition, if you have previously purchased a brick for a Pre-1981 LODD and would like it moved to this special section, please let them know by April 15, 2016. They are very pleased that this special section will be dedicated to all those who lost their lives prior to 1981. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is pleased to announce a new event this year, a Wellness Conference for Survivors. This conference will be held May 13-14, 2016, in Portland, Oregon. The theme for the conference is “Setting a Course for the Road Ahead.” For spouses, life partners, parents, adult children and siblings, this conference is designed to address physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The focus of this conference may especially appeal to those whose firefighter died within the past five years. The conference will begin with a welcome reception on Thursday, May 12 beginning at 7:00pm. Friday and Saturday will be filled with informational guidance and tips focusing on how to take care of your physical body, your mind and emotions. CLICK HERE to view the entire conference agenda
